2016 Sustainable Development Report

The report also reflects on the success of the smelter’s female employees in the state and national women in resources awards, the challenges posed by Tasmania’s energy crisis as well as detailing a selection of projects and initiatives undertaken by employees over the past twelve months.

Key highlights for Bell Bay Aluminium in 2016 were:

  • Employees, Jenny Jones, Aileen Chuo and Kelly Down were announced as category winners at the 2016 Tasmanian Women in Resources Awards
  • Safety and Training Officer Kelly Down was announced as the Outstanding Tradeswoman, Operator or Technician at the 2016 Women in Resources National Awards
  • Process maintainer Brendan Sheriff was announced as the winner of the 2016 George Town Chamber of Commerce Young Achiever’s Award
  • BBA was awarded the 2016 WorkSafe Tasmania Award for the best work health and safety management system at the annual awards presentation
  • Bell Bay Aluminium hosted the annual Tasmanian Minerals Emergency Response Competition for the first time in competition history
  • The smelter unveiled its newest robots, two autonomously guided vehicles designed to transport product from the casting facility to the warehouse
  • Extensive installation works were completed in the smelter’s switchyard comprising new equipment and protection and control systems enabling the smelter to continue to operate above 325 megawatts and up to 355 megawatts should that opportunity present itself in the future.
