Bell Bay Aluminium volunteers give heart to City Mission

Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium has made a life-saving donation to Launceston’s Mission Health, funding the purchase of a CoaguChek Pro II Kit – a crucial device that measures blood clotting factors.

This will allow Mission Health's medical professionals to conduct immediate tests and adjust medications, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes for their clients.

Bell Bay Aluminium General Manager Richard Curtis said the donation was driven by a deeper understanding of Mission Health’s needs.

“Many of Mission Health’s clients suffer from various forms of heart disease, and due to their transient lifestyles, it’s often difficult to follow up on pathology results,” he said.

“This donation ensures clients receive immediate care, lowering the chances of heart attacks, strokes, or emergency visits to Launceston General Hospital.”

The idea for this donation emerged after Bell Bay Aluminium employees volunteered at City Mission’s Youngtown Warehouse and Orana House last September through the RioVolunteers program.

“Our teams were deeply moved by the incredible services provided to those facing homelessness and hardship. They were eager to give back and identified Mission Health as the ideal recipient of our support,” Mr Curtis said.

Inspired by the stories from their team members’ volunteering days, other Bell Bay team members also contributed funds initially set aside for Christmas functions.

“I am proud of our people for embodying our values of care, courage, and curiosity. Their commitment has enabled us to provide this essential equipment, which will undoubtedly make a significant difference in many lives,” Mr Curtis added.
