Grade 5/6 students from George Town have brought their innovative ideas to life, showcasing their creativity at a community exhibition.
Supported by Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium, the NARLE Project—an anagram of ‘LEARN’—aims to empower upper primary students in Tasmania by enhancing their problem-solving skills through hands-on learning experiences.
Through the work of participants in this year's Tasmanian Leaders Program, the NARLE Project has linked students, local industry, and the community.
Andrew Johnson, the founder of the NARLE Project and participant in the 2024 Tasmanian Leaders Program, said, “The NARLE project workshops have uncovered wonderful, creative thinkers and problem solvers among the Year 5/6 students of George Town.”
“We are grateful that Bell Bay Aluminium shares our vision for the young people of George Town, providing this opportunity for the NARLE Program to connect with students, ignite their imaginations, and develop ideas for the future.”
Bell Bay Aluminium’s General Manager, Richard Curtis, said the concept marks the first step in a journey towards NARLE’s long-term goal of cultivating a culture of innovation in Tasmania. “It’s been a delight to see this learning opportunity spark a passion for innovation, developing the skill to use creativity to problem solve, in students from George Town,” Mr. Curtis said.
George Town Mayor Greg Kieser expressed his delight in launching the program with the students. “Aligning with the Australian Curriculum’s emphasis on creative and critical thinking, NARLE reinforces essential skills for our future leaders.”
The initiative involved workshops where students were encouraged to think creatively to develop ideas to help themselves or a family member in everyday life. They then brought their concepts to life through drawings and models.
The project culminates with an exhibition where students from Star of the Sea College, Port Dalrymple School, and South George Town Primary will showcase their creations to the community at the Jim Mooney Gallery from Monday, December 9 to Sunday, December 22.
